Open Interest Build-Ups: Volatility Research

WarRoom’s Leverage Expansion research found that a one-day build in open interest, together with a shift in volatility, was followed by larger price moves than matched comparison states: +1.806 ATR across 313 observations. It did not show which direction price would move. Hourly open-interest spikes marked higher volatility, not direction.

Key takeaways
  • Daily: +1.806 ATR more expansion than matched states, 95% interval +0.893 to +2.998 ATR, 313 observations, 176 coins.
  • Hourly: after large open-interest additions, next-hour volatility was about 1.73× normal.
  • Neither result says whether price goes up or down.
  • The hourly result applies to the original, more liquid coin group; the current wider group has not been re-tested.

The daily result

Open interest is the number of futures contracts still open. The daily study compared days with a one-day open-interest build plus a volatility transition against matched comparison states, and measured how far price travelled afterwards in ATR (average true range) units.

One-day and two-day build windows both held up under robustness checks; the shorter one was kept because it is simpler. A follow-up study reproduced the combined effect but could not show that open-interest growth causes it on its own.

What it does not tell you

Open questions
QuestionAnswer from the research
Does open-interest growth alone explain the effect? Not established
Does the direction of perpetual futures order flow (delta) predict price direction? No reliable relationship
Can the state be read as a long or short call?No

Historically this state was followed by larger moves than matched states. Treat it as context about expansion risk, not a forecast, and judge direction from other evidence.

The hourly result

A 180-day confirmation looked at exceptional hourly open-interest moves: a one-hour impulse and a six-hour cascade.

Large purges (open interest falling sharply) were followed by quieter trading. The study treated these as volatility and positioning states, not trade signals. It used coins with at least $5 million of perpetual volume in the prior 24 hours. WarRoom now covers coins down to $0.5 million, and that wider group has not inherited the result, so the hourly monitor is labelled descriptive.

Frequently asked questions

Does rising open interest mean price will go up?

No. Rising open interest means more contracts are open, and every contract has a long and a short side. WarRoom’s research found that a sharp open-interest build with a volatility shift was followed by bigger moves than usual, but it did not predict their direction.

What is ATR?

Average true range measures how much a coin typically moves per candle. Measuring results in ATR units makes a $60,000 coin and a $1 coin comparable. +1.806 ATR means price travelled about 1.8 typical candle ranges further than in matched comparison states.
